I can’t believe it’s December! The best month of the year! (I might be a tad biased because my birthday is in December but also I am essentially the spirit of Christmas all year round, so in December my TRUE FORM becomes visible.) And you know another great thing that starts happening in December? BOOK LISTS.
I saw Regan from Peruse Project do this book tag a little while ago and I thought, yes! I can do that too! I think it’s meant to be done in autumn rather than, say, at the beginning of December but WHATEVER THOR I DO WHAT I WANT. Let’s take a look at my reading plans for the end of the year and also start pining for some 2019 releases! This tag was originally created by Ariel Bissett.
Are there any books you started this year that you need to finish?
YES. I’m usually really good at finishing books once I start them but I started reading Beneath the Citadel on the plane to New York last month and I just haven’t picked it back up. I think maybe I wasn’t in the right mood for it? It’s a YA fantasy about prophecies with a bunch of queer main characters, which sounds like something I would be super here for, so it’s weird that I haven’t been feeling particularly interested in finishing it. I’m hoping to be able to put that down to not being in the right place for it (or lack of plane concentration, maybe) and to finish it by the end of the month!
Do you have an autumnal book to transition into the end of the year?
So, uh, it’s definitely the end of the year by now. But! I just finished reading Scarlet and Ivy: The Lost Twin, which can kind of count as an autumn/winter transitional read! It’s a middle grade mystery set in a boarding school (aw yeahhh) in the 1930s (AW YEAHHH) and the combination of a new school year + mystery feels very autumn/winter to me!
Is there a new release you’re still waiting for?
Yes! I’m waiting for Queen of Air and Darkness, the final book in Cassandra Clare’s Dark Artifices series. I am Invested. I am particularly Invested in TY, autistic Sherlock Holmes obsessed probably queer nerd of my heart. And Emma! And Mark and Kieran and Christina! e v e r y o n e. I read that Lord of Shadows ended on a cliffhanger and I was like, well, I’m sure it’ll be okay, but I WAS WRONG. GIVE ME QUEEN OF AIR AND DARKNESS NOW, I MUST KNOW THE ENDING.
What are three books you want to read before the end of the year?
I’m going to cheat here and say Lady Midnight and Lord of Shadows as two of these seeing I have to reread them before Queen of Air and Darkness and they’re the next two books I’m planning to read. As for the third, I want to pick up Strange Grace soon! I bought it while I was in New York and like. Queer poly fantasy about a town that has to sacrifice a boy to the woods every year? yES.
Is there a book you think could still shock you and become your favourite book of the year?
I don’t know! I don’t want to rule this out but off the top of my head, I’m really not sure. I do have a good feeling about Strange Grace though, because I loooved Queens of Innis Lear by Tessa Gratton when I read it over the summer, but I guess I’ll see.
Have you already started making reading plans for 2019?
ha ha ha ha ha yes. I need The Vanishing Stair, the sequel to Truly Devious, in my eyes as soon as possible (the boarding school mystery theme in this post: :ok_hand:). There are a few other books coming out next year that I am psyched for too, so just to name a few:
- Red, White and Royal Blue – Casey McQuiston: (adult m/m romance between a prince and the president’s son! The president is a woman!)
- The Devouring Grey – Christine Lynn Herman: (YA with queer people! and mysteries! and creepy-ass woods!!)
- King of Scars – Leigh Bardugo: (More Grishaverse! Nikolai Lantsov, an excellent disaster bisexual, pls tell me more about your secret monster ways.)
I was similarly coherent about this topic on Twitter, if you’d like to read more about some 2019 books that have me all Jason Momoa Pulling Out a Chair.gif!
And that’s the tag! What are you planning to read this month? Do you have any 2019 reading goals? Do you have any books you want to finish before the end of the year? Let me know!
