top ten tuesday: priority tbr books for 2019

Top Ten Tuesday!

Recently I moved all my physical tbr books off my bookshelves and into piles on their own so that I could have a clearer idea of what I’ve actually got to read and that pile is… let’s sportingly say sizeable, if by sizeable we mean “five stacks of books impeding my way across the living room”. Next year I want to try and actually make a dent in it! I will get to read stories I’m really looking forward to AND reclaim inches of floor space! A double victory!

This post is also for the Top Ten Tuesday prompt “Winter 2018 TBR” — I’m twisting the prompt a little bit because I’ve already talked about my December reading plans here.

Here are ten books I want to try and prioritise reading in early 2019:

book cover for The Last Namsara - a sparkly sword pressed to a mouth Wicked Like a Wildfire book cover: purple background with delicate flower and butterfly illustrations Passenger book cover: a city in a bottle and an age-of-sail ship reflected in the water beneath Wayfarer book cover: a tree scene in a glass jar with birds escaping and a city reflected underneath

The Last Namsara by Kristen Ciccarelli: One of the themes of this list is “I got it in a subscription box and haven’t got round to it yet” so we’re starting as we mean to go on! I was really excited to get this book in a Fairyloot box back in.. 2017, I think, but despite that and also despite it being a book about STORYTELLING AND DRAGONS, I still haven’t picked it up. 2019: DRAGON TIME.

Wicked Like a Wildfire by Lana Popovic: Once again, a book I got in a Fairyloot box! (You can read my unboxing of that box here :D) I hear this book is about sisters with quiet magical powers living in a seaside town who learn about their family secrets, so like, magical realism, GORGEOUS cover: I’m in.

Passenger/Wayfarer by Alexandra Bracken: I’ll be totally honest here: these were cover buys. I had just started following more bookstagram accounts on Instagram and I saw these books and fell in love with the covers and then… I bought them. I think I found out whether there are queer characters (apparently yes! a pair of minor characters) and the premise (time travel… adventure mystery romance?) seemed interesting and like… I need to get to these. If nothing else, they are too beautiful to be unread!

Even the Darkest Stars cover: a long shot of a figure in a cloak standing in mountain foothills under a starry sky Truthwitch UK cover: a symbol with a dragon's head on a dark blue background House of Shattered Wings cover: crystal-looking wings open against a big church wall Those Above cover: a sword with a winged hilt striking through water

Even the Darkest Stars by Heather Fawcett: Sing it with me: I got this in a Fairyloot box in 2017 and haven’t read it yet. Honestly, I don’t know a lot about this book beyond the fact that it’s a YA fantasy set in… the mountains, I assume, from the cover, which I think is why I haven’t picked it up yet, but I like that about it! I’m looking forward to reading something I really don’t know much about.

Truthwitch by Susan Dennard: This is a series I found about from Booktube and I think I got this book for Christmas last year. I’m super into the idea of any kind of truth magic (like the Lying Cat from the Saga series! which.. is another series I need to finish) and I’m excited to give this series a try. (I also want to try Susan Dennard’s previous series, because it’s a YA Victorian zombie series and like. Yes please and thank you. But that’s not what this post is about! Finish the books you own first, self!!!)

The House of Shattered Wings by Aliette de Bodard: I have had this book for literal years, oh my god. My wife brought it home for me when she worked as a bookseller because she knows that queer characters and angels = I will definitely read it, and yet I still have not picked this up. SELF. COME ALONG. I also love the sound of Aliette de Bodard’s latest book, In the Vanisher’s Palace (f/f Beauty and the Beast retelling with dragons!) and hearing so many good things about that one has reminded me I still really want to read this one!

Those Above by Daniel Polanksy: Again, my wife got this as a proof when she was a bookseller and was like, I think you will like it! And I was like, yes, I think I will! And then obviously I still have not read it. This is a fantasy set in a Roman-inspired military world, as far as I know, and it’s another book I’m looking forward to picking up with limited knowledge beforehand and just like… diving in.

All the Ever Afters cover: illustration of a scroll with the title on, a castle at the top, a shoe at the bottom, and a wax seal in the middle Alex & Eliza cover: a black heart with the silhouette of Alex & Eliza kissing on the top

All the Ever Afters by Danielle Teller: We’re onto books I picked up at YALC! That’s not so long ago! All the Ever Afters is a Cinderella retelling focusing on Cinderella’s wicked stepmother, which is frankly all I need to know. Fairytale retelling! Lady villains! A direct route to my heart!

Alex & Eliza by Melissa de la Cruz: Another book I got from YALC! Because I know myself, I know that if I don’t get round to this book soon, it will languish on my tbr pile for ages just because I don’t typically read a lot of m/f historical romance and I’ll keep bumping it down the queue in favour of other books. But I don’t want to do that! I want to give it a read! I got this in a blind date with a book! Anyway, when I’m looking for a quicker read than some of the denser fantasy books on this list, I’m excited to give this one a try.

Have you read any of these books? Do you have an idea of the books on your tbr pile that you want to read first in 2019? Let me know! ❤
